I have a Youtube music channel called AgesPRESENTS that I use to help promote my music and broaden my reach through the network of Youtube. The great thing about Youtube is that it is basically an equal opportunity employer and now that we live in the Youtube era of music people can really have access to a global audience when trying to promote themselves. This is a great opportunity that artists in the past never had. Artists in the past had to rely 100% on the record label to get his or her music heard. Now this just isn’t the case anymore. When you talk about the internet and music it always brings up the debate as to whether or not the Internet destroyed the music industry. My vote on this is that it didn’t destroy it just changed it. In reality it evened out the playing field. Yes people aren’t making the same kind of money that they used to be off of their music, (don’t worry they are making plenty of money other ways) but the onset of the internet has evened the playing field. Youtube is the biggest player and it is important for anybody who is trying to do anything in the music industry to figure out a way to find success on this platform. Hundreds and maybe even thousands of careers in music have been launched by Youtube music videos. There are a variety of videos on Youtube that will work to help you do this. You can promote yourself with original music composed and written by yourself. This works great because people love to hear original new music, the only problem is that it will be hard for people to find your music if nobody has heard of you. Remix’s are cool as well because it’s great to hear new versions of songs that are already out and it will help you get views because people are already searching for the music that you are remixing. Historically the best way to promote yourself and your music as an artist on Youtube is to do acoustic covers of popular songs. For some reason people love to hear acoustic covers (either guitar or piano) of popular songs. Take Justin Bieber for example he was able to get millions of views on his cover songs that were the primary reason that he was launched to superstardom. A friend of mine Carly Lindt has over almost a million hits on some of her cover songs. Through here covers we got an original song and music video that we did over 80,000 hits on Youtube. So doing covers is a great way to start doing covers with the goal of eventually showing your audience your original music. This is a great strategy to promote your music on Youtube. However what do you do if you are a producer who wants to develop a buzz on Youtube. You can’t really do cover songs so the best option would be to do remix’s of popular songs and try to get people to find your remix when they are searching for the popular songs. Then over time you can develop a real buzz around you the producer not the artist that you are doing remix’s for. What makes Youtube different from the other video communities such is Vimeo is its size. Youtube is the 3rd largest website in the world. Only Google and Facebook rank higher. That being said there are many opportunities to show your music to an international audience via Youtube. It is up to you to take advantage of them.
