Beats By Dre Review
I recently purchased a pair of the beats by dre headphones because I have been having problems with my neighbors and the bass that comes from my sub woofer when I make beats. Completely understandable. I had problem though because even though a part of me wanted to ignore the neighbors and the noise complain they called in I really couldn’t do that and I needed to hear the bass while I compose beats to keep me feeling inspired in the music. My solution was the beats by dre. After going to guitar center to see if I could find a pair of studio monitor headphones that have more bass then the beautifully sounding Beyer Dynamics that I have. The guy at guitar center explained to me that the other headphones lacked bass and if bass is what I wanted I should go with the beats by dre. So that is what I did.
First Impressions
Not incredibly impressed. The sound is not nearly as clean as I expected it to be. The EQ of the headphones is very midrange heavy and while the bass is definitely bumping the overall sound quality is lacking what I am used to. The more that I listened to the headphones the more my opinion changed on them. The funny thing about these headphones is that they sound good only with certain music and more specifically certain mixes of certain music. The beats really shine when the mix is really, really clean. Electronic dance music and pop hip-hop are two genres that really excel with this. Both have clean electronic bass that catches the subwoofer of the beats by dre and sounds great. Keli’s album Flesh Tone sounds AMAZING on the beats by dre the kick drum is nice and deep and thumps perfectly underneath the other sounds in the mix that all stand out nicely in there own frequency space. An album that does not sound good is Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. This album is an album that is dripping with analog it’s mixed really “heavy” and “full”. There is nothing wrong with this mix and this album is one of my favorites but in my opinion it does not sound good on the beats by dre.
What music sounds good?
Good music to listen to on the beats by dre would be hip hop, pop, house, reggae, and most kinds of electronic music. A good reference would be if the drums used in the music are using a drum machine then the beats by dre would be a good choice. If the music uses live drums the beats by dre are not a great option. This isn’t to say that the Red Hot Chili Peppers aren’t going to sound good on the headphones. You will still be able to enjoy the music. But lets be honest if you are going to spend 300 dollars on a pair of headphones then you are going to want the music to sound incredible not just good.
Construction
One of the best things about the beats by dre headphones is the fit. The headphones fit perfectly over your ears and are extremely comfortable. The overall construction of the headphones isn’t great though they seem to be pretty cheaply put together and I have to say I am pretty concerned with them breaking in the first six months of me owning them. Only time will tell and I am going to be careful not to drop them or take them out of my studio too much. That being said though I have seen a lot of people who where them on a day to day basis and the headphones look the same as the day they got them.
Conclusion
I like my beats by dre. I know what they offer for me and I like using them for casual listening use but more importantly I like them for making beats. They are great for that. I can make a beat with the beats by dre on and really get lost in it and get a great idea of how much bass I have in my song. It really helps me pick out the right kick drums and not overcompensate the bass in my mix because it doesn’t sound like it’s bumping. The headphones aren’t nearly as accurate as some of their 300-dollar counterparts but its ok that’s not what I want them for. I hope have found my beats by dre review helpful. I just wanted to help in your purchasing decision. At the end of the day I like my beats by dre headphones but are they worth the 300 dollars that you end up paying for them? Probably not. A lot of your 300 dollars is going into marketing and the brand name of headphones. I always thought that Dr. Dre took his time with everything he did to make the product as good as possible. I think this is a part of the reason why we don’t have a Detox album. So I expected that the headphones would be of the upmost quality. While this is not entirely true they are still a nice pair of headphones.
